Abstract

17,535. Adams, H. E. July 23. Movable-abutment type; working-fluid supply.-Pistons a, a', b, b<1>, Fig. 2, are geared together and rotate in annular chambers which intersect. Working fluid is admitted to the spaces c<1>, d'. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement in which two chambers F, G intersect at rightangles a third chamber E. The pistons in the chambers F, G are connected on the outside to frame f<5>, g<5> and the pistons in the chamber E are connected on the inside to a frame e<3>. The three frames are geared together. Fig. 11 shows a cross section through an engine in which two chambers H, L are intersected by two chambers I, K. The pistons in the chambers I, K are carried by a shaft R and the pistons in the chambers H, L are carried by frames O on shafts h<2>, l<2> which are geared to the shaft R. Steam is admitted to the chambers through passages p<1>, r in the stationary casing. In an engine operated by internal combustion, the explosive mixture is introduced into pockets in the pistons through the passages in the stationary parts and the mixture passes from these pockets through ports in the sides into the working chambers as the pistons cross the chambers. The pistons are divided longitudinally and the parts are separated by a tapered key by which adjustment can be made for wear.
