Abstract
4246. Ford, A., and Ford & Sons, P. March 18. Concretes; compositions containing plaster, calcium sulphate, &c.-Artificial stone resembling natural stone, such as granite, amygdaloid &c., is made by mixing the crushed stone with a cement having substantially the same hardness and expansibility. As an example, 60 parts by weight of crushed stone with or without coarse siliceous sand is mixed with a cement consisting of 30 parts of monohydrated or anhydrous calcium sulphate, 5 to 8 parts of Portland cement, and 1 to 3 parts of aluminium sulphate. The mass is mixed with water and, when set, may be treated with sadium or other alkaline silicate to harden the surface. For polished stone, crushed alabaster or marble is used, together with the mixed cements, with water containing about 3 per cent of alum or aluminium sulphate, and sometimes boracic acid. After setting, the stone is hardened with alkaline silicate and washed, and the surface is ground and polished.
