The tube is open at the bottom and closed at the top by a flap valve 17, and has a perforation 16 to enable excess of air in the drum to be expelled by the water through the valve 17. The float slides on a double-walled tube T carrying the admission and exhaust valves 13, 6 for the compressed air &c. The float, at the top of its stroke, lifts the tube and thereby closes the exhaust valve and opens the admission valve ; at the bottom of its stroke, it closes the admission and opens the exhaust valve. The compressed air passes into the chamber 1 through perforation 19 in the outer wall of the tube T.
