Abstract

1751. Signal Ges. Feb. 3, 1914, [Convention date]. [Addition to 3934/13.] Subaqueous sound signals.-In submarine signalling - apparatus, an auxiliary sound-emitting device, arranged near to, and used for testing, the sound receiver as described in the parent Specification, is made capable of emitting notes of different frequency and amplitude. For example, a set of bells may be provided, sounded singly by hammers, or a single tuning-fork may be used, sounded by a hammer, the prongs of the fork having adjustable weights to vary the pitch of the note. The hammers may be operated mechanically or electrically. In another arrangement, a tuning-fork is vibrated by directly-applied electro-magnetic means, the amplitude of oscillation being controlled by a variable resistance in the circuit of the electro-magnet, which is energized by an alternating-current generator coupled to an electric motor. The speed of revolution of the motor may be varied by means of a rheostat to control the frequency of the fork. Fig. 4 shows a casing 14 attached to a ship's hull, which is caused to vibrate by a siren 15 projecting into the casing. The siren is rotated by a motor 16 with a variable resistance 18 in circuit. The frequency may be ascertained from a speed indicator 19. Supply of compressed air to the siren through a pipe 20 is controlled by an electrically-operated valve 21. The abovedescribed sounding-devices may be controlled from a distance.
