Abstract

Signals indicating proximity of land, vessels, etc.; locating subaqueous sounds.-For determining the depth of the sea, or the distance and direction of other ships &c., devices are used for measuring the strength of the echo evoked by a subaqueous sound-producing apparatus. The transmitter may be arranged to produce sounds of a constant intensity, so that the sonometer indicates directly the proximity of the reflecting-object; or the strength of the transmitted sound may be varied until the sonometer gives a fixed indication. The direction of a reflecting-object may be determined by turning the receiver funnel until a maximum effect is observed. The transmitter may comprise a water siren in a chamber separated from the sea by a diaphragm ; or a submerged bell or explosive cartridges may be used. The receiver is shown in Fig. 4 and comprises a tuning-fork n with a glass rod o carrying a bead, which focuses a source of light in the field of a microscope p. The microscope is equipped with a device for drawing out the path of the vibrating point of light into a curve. As an alternative method, the vibrations may be optically or otherwise recorded.
