Abstract

192,725. Baron, H., (Signal Ges.). Sept. 1,1921. Bell and gong signals; subaqueous audible signals.-An electrically operated sound-producer without moved striking parts is operated by aperiodic current impulses or by damped electrical oscillations to give sounds resembling the strokes of a bell. The arrangement is particularly intended for subaqueous sound signalling controlled from a distance, but is applicable to signalling in air. In one arrangement, a tuning fork 5 is struck by a pneumatic hammer 6, the sound affecting a microphone 1 to produce corresponding current variations in the windings of a sound producer 3. In another form, two electromagnetic devices similar to 3 are connected in series, the diaphragm of one being struck by a pneumatic hammer to cause the other to emit a corresponding sound. In these types of apparatus, the oscillation producer 5 &c. may serve also for signalling through the air. In further modifications, the device 3 is operated by discharging a condenser through its coils, and by electric oscillations due to spark-gap discharges, make and break devices being used to control the number and period of sound impulses emitted. In other forms, a single impulse is used to initiate free vibrations of the sound producer, on which the damping of the emitted sound waves then directly depends.
