Abstract

131. Liversidge, H. P., and Pennsylvania Appliance Co. Jan. 4. Fusible cut-outs.-A receptacle 10 for compressed gas, for example carbonic acid gas, has a projecting tubular extension 11 surrounded by a metal cylinder 12 and closed by the circular end of the fuse wire 18 inserted a short distance within it. The cylinder 12 is clamped to a holder 1, which serves as one of the terminals of the fuse, by a clamping-piece 2 pivoted on a screw 3 at the top of the holder, the act of swinging the clamping- piece into the central position serving to clamp the cylinder 12 and to bring the hook-piece 4, which forms part of the clamping-piece, between a lug 5 and a stop 6 on an extension of the holder 1. The fuse wire, which has a smaller cross - section in proximity to its point of attachment to the receptacle 10, is secured at its other end to a terminal piece 17 and is enclosed in an insulating-tube 15. With excessive current, the portion of the fuse which serves to seal the receptacle 10 melts and releases the compressed gas, which expels any remaining fragments nf the fusible strip and blows out the are.
