" Be it'k' own that I, BAXTER State of Ohio, have invented certain new and 'useful'Improvements in Ignition Dewoes, of which the following is" a specifi- My invention relates to mechanical spark plugs and has for its object the production of a device of the character referred to, of
simple and durable construction, in which the same electric current which serves to enerate thefspark when broken, also operates the device'mechanicallyto establish the spark gap when the circuit is closed.
1 A further object isto provide a power in-l magnet of laminated and iron clad construction which is comparatively inexpensive and highly compact. the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,Figure 1, is a front elevational view of the novel spark plug) Fig. 2, is a sideview of the same.
3;, is a plan view, ,partlyin section, disclosing the construction of the magnet and armature parts." i My device is preferably operated in con-" nection with a .timer,.by means of which an j electric circuit is established at the proper instant 'to effect the operation of the de-- vice, the breaking of said circuit causing a spark to be formed between the contact points of the device located within the cylinder of a gas engine, to ignite the gas therein. I
A, indicates a casting usually made of cast iron, having a flange portion'A', provided with holes through which bolts are passed to secure it to the cylinder of an engine, the
body portion A, constituting a plug fitting. into an'opening 1n the engine cylinder. Extending through the casting A, is a metal rod B, provided with a shoulder B, which abuts the face of the casting A and serves to effect a tight joint at this place. The rod B, is provided at one endwith' an angular projection B in which is fitted a contact pin C, adapted to contact with one end of the rod D, also extending through the casting A, but which is insulated therefrom by a tube of insulating material such as mica, 1I1d1- cated in dotted lines'designated E, and by two insulating washers F and G, respective'l and isheld in position by a nut 'H, whi also coacts' to present a binding post M. IGNITION DEVICE.
I i Specification of Letters Patent. Patnted Feb, 15, 1910, Application filedlauuary 14, 1908. Serial No. 410,730. i
to hold one end of a wire I, in contact with the rod D, two metalwashers J and'K,
being located on each side of said wire and in contact with the rod D, to effect a good electrical contact. Connected to the upper end of rod 13, is a collar L, which is held 1n position by a pin M, and formed integral with said collar is a projection L', containing a hole in its under side in which one end of a helical spring N, is held, said spring extending around said collar and with its lower end engaged within a small hole in the top of the casting A, the spring serving to hold the rod B, so that the contact C will normally rest against a contact area onthe Bolts 0, O, rigidly connected to the flange portion A, pass-through the bend P, of a magnet core P, and through section Q, Q,
at either side of'said bend, the threaded pro-- bolts 0, O, and by pins S, S, the latter containing intermediately located threaded sockets for the engagement of the ends of screws T, T, projecting to constitute guides for an armature U, the screw heads acting as stops to limit the movement of the armature from the core poles.
Centrally secured to the armature by a nut V, is the threaded end of a rod V, which extends;'slidingly "within'a tube of insulating material W, disposed between the magnet coils, and having its forward thread ed-portion clamped to the core bend P, by nuts W, W the rod V,"extending beyond the projecting end of the tube.
A coiled expansion spring X, embraces the tube between the coils and abuts at one end against the inner tube-fastening nut W, while its outer end bears against the armature to normally maintain the latter repelled relative to the magnet poles. The ends of the wire forming the magnetic coils," are connected with binding posts X, X respectively, the post X being connectedby the short length I, of wire clamped between the plates J, K, at the end of the rod D.
The positive conductor "leading from a timer on the engine, is connected to the binding post X and the return'conductor is connected to the negative pole of the the bindin post X through the electroergizes the magnet which attracts the armamagnetiq means comprising coils, a yokeignition of the gases in the cylinder.

timer at one end and grounded at some suitable point on the engine, a battery or other source of electric current being included in the circuit. Therefore, when the timer contacts close the circuit, the current flows to magnet coils to' the binding. 0st X, conductor I, rod D, and contact and through the rod B, to the grounded terminal. The completion of the circuit thus described, en-
The use of the laminated core in the present construction of electro-magnets permits of quick magnetic action between the armafore and the poles. An ignition device embodying my inveu-' tion is not only of simple and durable construction, but is capable of high efficiency' of.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 1. The combination in a sparking device, of rods supported in bearingsgihsulated with respect to each other, one oi-said rods being; revoluble and normally maintained in con tact at one end with the other rod, a projection on said revoluble rod, and electroi shaped core, an armature and a rod con-- nected thereto which extends between the coils, and is adapted toexert a thrust against the rod projection to turn its rod and interrupt its contact with the other rod. I 2. he combination in a sparking device,
of a casting,'rods bearing therein but insulated with respect to each other, one of said rods being revoluble and normally maintained in contact at'one end with the other rod, electro magnetic means comprising coils, a laminated yoke-shaped core and an armature withmeans extending between the coils for acting on the revoluble rod to turn the same and interrupt its contact with the other rod, the bend of the yoke-shaped core being bolted to the casting.
3. The combination in a sparking device, of a casting, rods bearing thereinbut'insulated with respect to each other, one of said rods being rei'oluble' and normally maintained in contact atone end with the other rod, elcctro-magnetic means[comprising coils, a lamlnated yoke-shaped core and an armature with means located between the .coils comprising a rod for acting on the rei'oluble rod to turn the same and interrupt its contact with the other rod, said electromagnetic means being secured to the casting by bolts projecting therefrom, passing through the bend of the core and engaged by clamp nuts.
4-. The combination in a sparking ClG\'1C8,.
of a casting, rods bearing therein but insulated with respect to each other, one of said rods being revoluble and normally maintained at one end in contact with the other and, electro-magnetic means comprislng coils, alammated yoke-sl1a1' ed=core, the
latter being secured to the casting, pins securing thelaminatlons, screws bearing in said pins, an armature guidmgly supported on'said screws and means coactive with the armature for turning the reyoli-ible rod to interrupt its contact with the otherrod.
