ELECTRIC SWITCH.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PARIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Edgewood Park, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Switches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to switches for electrical circuits, and particularly to switches that are electro-magnetically operated and are provided with blow-out windings.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and improved structure and arrangement' of the parts of switches of .the character designated whereby the magnetic circuit of the blow-out winding may be. at least partially coincident with that of the operating electro-magnet.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing is a view, partially in side elevation and partially in section, of a switch constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a view, mainly in front elevation but partially in section, of the switch shown in .Fig. 1.
Mounted upon a slab or base 1 of marble,
or other suitable insulating material, and
fastened thereto by means of bolts 2 and lugs 3, is a magnetizable member 4 that comprises a substantially rectangular frame 5 which surrounds a solenoid 6 and constitutes the greater portion of the magnetic circuit thereof, a core portion '5 that projects into the upper endof the solenoid 6, and upwardly extending portions 7 the free ends of which are provided with inwardly extending cylindrical bosses 8 having opposing faces.
The solenoid 6 is provided with a movable core 9 to which is attached the lower end of a rod lO that projects through an opening in the portion 5 of the magnetizable frame and is threaded, at its upper end, to a contact terminal piece 11, a lock-nut 12 being provided to prevent alterations in the adjustment of the connection. The contact terminal piece 11 is located between the opposing faces of the frame extensions? and comprises stepped surfaces 13 and 14 with which the respective stationary spring-supported contact terminals 15 and 16 are Specification of Letters Patent.

adapted to engage. A detachable plate 17 may be utilized-to provide the contact surface 14 in order to facilitate repairs made necessary by wear or the mutilation of the terminals by arcs. The terminal piece 11 may be connected to a binding post '18, by means of flexible conductors 19 that pass through an opening 20 in the insulating slab 1, the binding post being secured upon' the rear of the insulating slab by means of one of the bolts 2 which passes through the in sulating slab and is threaded into one of the The contact term nals 15. and 16 may be secured, by means of springs 21-and 22, to a suitable block 23 that is secured upon the front of the insulating slab by means of a bolt 24 which projects through the insulating slab and the outer end of which may be provided with an extra nut 25 to serve as a binding post or clamping means for connecting to an external circuit.
The frame extensions 7 constitute. pole pieces for the blow-out winding that comprises two coils 26 and 27 which are mounted upon the respective projections 8, -.the coils being connected together b means of terminal leads 26 and 27 and in series in the circuit which the switch is adapted to control, as is usual with such switches. Insulating plates '28 are located between the faces of the polar extension bosses 8 at the outer sides of the separable switch terminals 11, 15 and 16 and are secured in position by means of an angle piece 29 that is fastened to the frame 5 by a bolt 29 and a bolt. 30 that clamps the plates to the outer-sides of ears 30 with which the angle piece is provided.
The switch structure which I have provided is well adapted for the operation of interlocking switches which are frequently employed in connection -with circuit-controllin switches for governing. the operation 0 translating devices such as motors. The movable armature core 9 is prevented from rotation by means of a set-screw 40 that is screwed into the frame 5 and the inner end of which is located in a suit-able groove 41 with which the'core is provided.
It willbe observed that the upper, horizontal portion of the frame 5 serves as a portion of the magnetic circuit for the operating solenoid 6 and also as a portion of the magnetic circuit for the blow-out winding; that is, the two magnetic circuits are partially coincident. The structure and arrangement of the parts of the switch are otherwise such as provide a simple and compact device, and it is to be understood that any of the detailsof construction and arrangement may be modifiedsomewhat from what is herein shown and described without departing from the scope of the invention.

The combination with two contact terminals, a movable core having a contact member to engage said terminals, asolenoid surrounding said core, and a magnetizablev solenoid frame having extensions provided with inwardly-projecting pole pieces the faces of which are adjacent to said contact terminals, of blow-out coils surrounding said pole pieces.

The combination with two contact terminals the contact faces of which areoffset from each other both laterally and longitudinally, and a longitudinally movable core having a contact member tomake successive engagement with said contact terminals, of a solenoid surrounding said core, a magnetizable solenoid frame having integral extennmaere contact terminals, and blow-out coils to energize said pole ieces.
6. The combmation with a base and two electrically connected but independently yielding contact terminals supported thereby, of a solenoid having a core provided with a contact member to engage said contact terminals successively, a magnetizable solenoid frame having integral extensions terminating in pole pieces adj acentto said contact terminals, and blow-out coils for said pole pieces.
7. The combination with a base, two electrically connected spring arms of different lengths which project laterally from said base, and contact pieces attached tofltheends of said arms, of a movable contact member flexibly connected to a terminal 011 said base and having stepped or offset contact surfaces, means for actuating said member parallel tosaid base to make successive engagement with said contact pieces, and a blowout winding the magnetic circuit of which passesv through said contact member and pieces.
8. The combination with a base, two electrically connected spring arms of different lengths which project laterally from said offset contact surfaces, means for actuating said member to make successive yielding engagement with said contact pieces, and a blow-out winding the magnetic circuit of which passes through said contact member and pieces.
9. The combination with a base, of two electrically connected spring arms of difi'erent lengths which project laterally from said base, contact pieces attached to the ends of .said arms, a solenoid, a core therefor, and a contact member mounted upon said core and having stepped or ofiset contact surfaces for movement parallel to said base and into successive engagement with said contact pieces.
