Abstract
18,381. Bairdow, T. Aug. 7. Emission of flames and hot gases, preventing.- To prevent the emission of flames and hot gases from the poking-holes of gas producers, blast - furnaces, &c., steam, air, water or other fluid is injected into the poking - hole, such as a, Fig. 1, from a number of horizontal slits in a pipe b .surrounding the hole. Each slit is of uniform width but increases in length from within outwards so that the issuing jet is of divergent fish-tail form. The steam or other supply is controlled by a valve e operated by a rod f, treadle or the like on which the attendant may stand. The pipe b is protected at the opening a by a recessed cap h. An angle-iron k protects the steam or other supply pipe.
