Abstract

17,265. Birdwood, F. T. July 21. Tobacco. - Nicotine &c. is removed from tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, &c. by subjecting them to the action of reduced pressure in a dry atmosphere, with or without the aid of heat. The tobacco is placed in containers N in a chamber A connected to a condenser L and exhaust pump M and heated by a jacket B supplied from a heater 0 with hot air, which may pass in addition or alternatively through the chamber A. Air may be admitted to the chamber A through an inlet A<1>. A further jacket C., which may contain lagging, is provided. The tobacco-containers K and the heating-jacket B may be of the kind described in Specification 17,024/14. The cover D may be replaced by a condenser Q, Fig. 2, in which products condensing upon the surface Pare collected in a trough P<1> and drawn off through a pipe R.
