Abstract
566,668. Drying peat. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Aktiebolaget Torkapparater). May 3, 1943, No. 6968. [Class 34 (ii)] . Aqueous materials, such as peat, are dried in two or more stages, the hot vapour obtained in one stage being used as heating agent in another stage. In a two-stage apparatus I, II, at high and low temperature respectively, each heating unit comprises tubes 4 mounted on rotatable tube plates 2, 3 which also divide the container 1 into three compartments 5, 6, 7, the compartments 5, 7 comprising inlet and outlet headers for heating medium, and compartment 6 comprising a drying chamber. The tubes 4 may have loose internal members to transmit heat and clean the heat transmitting surfaces during rotation. Flue gases are employed for heating apparatus I, and are reduced to 400-600‹ C. by admixture with cool gases from header 7 supplied by blower 11. Peat passes through from 8 to 9 in the same direction as the heating gas. Vapour expelled from the peat is carried off by some of the flue gas from furnace 10, mixing chamber 5, or outlet chamber 7, and is admitted to inlet 5 of apparatus II, through which peat passes in the opposite direction from 8 to 9. Latent heat of the vapour is available in apparatus II and condensate passes to outlet 12, and gas to fan 13. Vapour from the chamber 6 is carried off by cool flue gas from apparatus I, the heat content of the gas being used in direct contact with the material, or for heating air or another gas which is used as drying medium. The saturated drying medium from apparatus II may be used as heating medium in another stage, or for preheating the material. Moisture thereby condensed on the material is removed mechanically. Alternatively, effluent gas and vapour from apparatus II may be used in apparatus 15 to preheat air for the furnace combustion.
