Abstract
17,024. Birdwood, F. T. July 17. Tobacco. - In apparatus for extracting nicotine, ainmonia, &c, from tobacco, cigars, or cigarettes, by heating in receptacles J in a chamber A, the nicotine is condensed upon a conical surface G and is run off from a trough G<1> by a pipe G<2>. The chamber A is heated by a jacket B divided by partitions C into compartments which have valved connexions E<4>, F<1> to a trunk E and an uptake F respectively. Hot gases enter through the trunk E from a heater D in which grids are heated by gas burners, air being supplied beneath the burners through a baffle. The gases are distributed by screens E<7> of asbestos, wire-gauze, &c. The jacket B is formed with double walls, between and around which, lagging may be placed. Air may be admitted to the chamber A through an inlet A<2>. The receptacles J may have perforated bottoms; or may have two horizontal perforated partitions and slots for admission of air in the side walls. Receptacles having an upwardly-directed conical base supporting a perforated false bottom may be used, and the base may be provided on the outside with a collecting-channel and a drip device to collect condensed vapours. A second condensing-device in the base of the vessel A may be used.
