Abstract
11,460. Sartig, J. May 9. Tobacco is denicotinized in closed vessels, where the air is rarefied, by means of low-pressure steam at a temperature below 100‹ C., condensation of the steam in the tobacco being prevented by jacketing the vessels. Steam is generated in the vessel 2 by means of a hot-water jacket 1, and passes over to the chamber 11 in which the tobacco is hung or placed. The products then pass through a cooler C, and a condenser D. The air-pump E withdraws the distillate and diminishes the pressure in the closed vessels. Any bound nicotine in the tobacco may be freed by treatment with ammonia. The nicotine may be recovered from the distillate in any known manner, for example, the nicotine may be bound with dilute acids.
