Abstract

Projectiles. - Consists in making practice non-explosive bullets free from slow-burning, obscuring, or smoke-producing materials with a charge of flash-light composition which ignites on impact and produces a temporary flash centred at the point of impact. In one form, Fig. 1, the composition d is put in a slot in the nose of the bullet a. In other forms, the composition is placed in an axial recess or in grooves around the bullet and is protected by a covering of paper, felt, fibre, or wax. The composition preferably contains 100 parts of potassium chlorate, 50 parts of antimony sulphide, 4 parts of red phosphorus, and 80 parts of glue solution; this composition gives an orange-coloured flash. The colour of the flash may be varied; for example, it may be made red or blue by the addition of strontium nitrate or a cobalt salt respectively.
