Abstract

122,509. Stokes, Sir F. W. S. Feb. 8, 1918. Gun cartridges; projectiles. - Relates to propellent charges intended especially for the projectiles described in Specification 10883/15, comprising a perforated subcalibre base socket E containing a cartridge G, the explosion gases of which pass out through the perforations E' and act on the end of the projectile F. According to the invention, a supplementary propellent charge is added in the form of duplex members A, B adapted to be sprung over the socket E. Each member A, B is constituted by strips or rods of an explosive unaffected by moisture, such as ballistite, bound together by silk cords C; and the two members are tied together at the ends by silk cords D, permitting the middle part to bulge out to embrace the socket E when the ends are pressed towards each other. The propulsive force may be varied by varying the size or number of duplex members used or by employing members made of various grades of explosives. The members may be protected by a coat of varnish.
