VASILJ PAPUGA. OF SOUTH OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
MULTIPLE CARTRIDGE.
Application filed June 19, 1916.
To all whom it may cont-cm Be it known that I. \hsim lixrcoA, a l'lungary, residing at South Omaha. in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska. have invented rtain new and useful Im n'ovements in Multiple Cartridges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in multiple cartridges.
The primary object of the device is the provision of a cartridge provided with a plurality of sets of missiles adapted to be released during the flight of the missiles through the air.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for hurling a number of bunches of projectiles in the air, the bunches being secured together by a fusible means whereby the elements of each bunch will be successively released during its course of travel.
The invention contemplates a cartridge having a percussion cap for igniting th powder therein adjacent separate packages of projectiles positioned within the cartridge forwardlv of the powder, each package of projectiles being bound together and the binding means secured by means of a fuse having its free end arrai-iged within the powder for ignition therein at lhe time of the explosion.
\Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood. the same consists in the novel construction. combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more, fullv described. illustrated in the accompanying dra\\'ings. and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a. part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view through tnedevicc. Figs. 2 and are transverse sectional views taken upon lines ll-ll and lll--lll of Fig. 1. Fig. l is a side elevation of the bundles of missiles detached. and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the separating disk employed between the powder and the missiles The present r-zmtt'idgc includes a tubular casing or shell i l of substantiallv the usual form, the same b ing provided with a closed end 11 and an. open end i2 while a percus sion member or cap 13 for exploding the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7. 1916.
Serial No. 104,411.
cartridge is centrally arranged through the closed end 11. A suitable charge of powder it or other desirable explosive is arranged within the shell ll surrounding the percussion cap 1 3 being packed therein and having a cl sing disk or wad l3 firmly seated against the outer end of the powder ll. plnralilv of p ckages of separate elongated bullets or projectiles it are bundled together and slu-ccssivelv arranged within the shell 1 in advance of and engaging the disk 15. These lmndles of projectiles are here shown as three in number. the plurality of projectiles forming each bundle being secured together by any convenient form of cords l7 wrapped around the projectiles, the cords being knotted at. convenient points as 18 while the separate bundles are conlltfitv together by similar connecting cords 19.
'lhe'three bundles of projectiles secured together as illustrated in Figs. 1 and i-of the drawing are in contact with each other and are arranged within the shell 10 engaging the disk 13 while a fuse 20 connects -the aforementioued kn ts 18 together and has its free end exlending through a perforation 21 in the disk 15 and embedded within the powder l l. closing disk or wad 22 is arranged within the out r end of the shell 10 for securing the entire charge th re in against :u-cidcntal displacement. lhe shell 10 is adapted to be lired by a breech loading ordnance. nol shown. and upon exploding the pcr ussion cap 1 3. the powder ll is ignited exerting its outward pressure against the disk 13 and the projectiles 1o forcibl ex ielling the projectiles through the open end 12 of th shell 10. the inner or rear end of the fuse 20 having been igniled bv tlu explosion of the powder 14. The l'use 20 mrns during the travel of the bundles of projectile through the aiand when each successive one of the knots 18 is re ched. tl cords 17 will be burned and therebv severed. releasing the bundles of projectiles 16 which will continue th ir individual flight. in this manner. all of the bundles will be ejected from the shell 10 simultaneouslv. the separate bundles being successivelv released for allowing missiles 10 of the bundles to fall upon the enemy.
\Vhat I claim as new is:-
l. A cartridge comprising a shell. an explosive. positioned therein, a plurality of the missiles arranged within the shell, a securing cord surrounding thesaid missiles, and a fuse connecting the said cord and explosive. I
2. A cartridge comprising a shell, a percussion cap in the closed end thereof, powder packed Within the shell adiacent the:
said cap, a disk engaging the said powder and provided with a perforation therethrough, a plurality of bundles of separate projectiles successively positioned Within the shell forwardly of the'said disk, combustible securing means surrounding the said bundles, connecting means for the.
bundlesattached to the said securing means, a fuse attached to the said securing means of the separate bundles and having a free end portion extending through the perforation of the said dislg and arranged Within the said powder; and a closingdisk Within the outer open end of the shell.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
