CHARGE FOR DETONATOR-CASINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. 17, 1908.
Application filed February 25, 1908. Serial No. 417,706.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LOTHAR lVoHLER, a philosophy and professor of chemistry in the Karlsruhe Institute ofTechnology, a subject of the German Emperor, and a 28 Georg Friedrichstrasse, in the city of Karlsruhe, Grand Duchy of Baden, part of the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Charges for Detonator-Casings, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention has reference to detonating casings, caps or primers for firing charges of explosive compounds, and it refers in particular to a substitute for the primer or initial ign'iters heretofore in use.
As 'a primer, that is to say, a compound which is capable of causing the detonation of all other explosives in contact therewith, 2o
about three tenths of a gram, the charge it- I have ascertained,
self being made up substantially of tri-nitrotoluol and of other explosive agents, but it was not pos'sibleto dispense with the use of the fulminate entirely.
that it is possible to produce the same initial or priming action, as has been "produced heretofore by the use of fu'lminate of mercury, by making use of the salts of the hydrazoic acid or azo imid or ihydrogenmitrid the formula of which is N H, the said salts having been suggested for use heretofore merely as explosive agents. These salts present the advantage, as compared with fulminate of mercury, that even less than one tenth the amount, required when fulminate of mercury is used, is sufiicient as an exploderor prlmer forigniting other explosives by means of the said salts,
[and for accomplishing just as complete a detonation of the explosives, contained in the explosive o'r detonating casing, as it is possible to produce by the use of fulminate of mercury.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal sectional view, enlarged from the usual. size, of a detonating casing, cap or primer for firing an explosive charge capable of producing the same effect as an ordinary charge for explosive cartridges, usually designated as standard number eight, that is to say cartridges containing two grams of fulminate of mercury. Into the small copper casing a of the said cartridge 1 (one) gram of picric acid or of tri-nitro-toluol b is placed, and then a quantity of 0.023 (23 thousandths) of a gram of lead hydrazoate 6, being the lead salt of the hydrazoic acid above referred to, and possessing the formula Pb(N is placed in a layer uponthe charge, and finally a perforated small metal thimble (Z is placed upon the contents, and the entire mass isthen compressed in the usual manner.
It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to any particular shape or size of the complete article, nor to its use for any one particular purpose.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-:-
l. detonating casing, cap or primer for firing charges of explosive compoundscomprising a cap, containing a heavy metal salt of the hydrazoic acid.
2. A detonating casing, cap or primer for firing charges of explosive compounds, 'comprising a metal cap, containing superimposed layers of a heavy metal salt of'the hydrazoic acid, and an explosive.
As an article of manufacture, a detonating cap or primer for firing charges of exlosives com risin a metal ca containin 7 C:
superimposed layers ofpicric acid and lea" hydrazoate.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification in two subscribing witnesses.
Signed at, Mannheim, Germany this 12th day of February 1908. I
LOTHAR WOHLER. Witnesses:
J os. H.--LEUTE, TERESA CA'rruRANI.
