Abstract

14,836. Bishop, G. A. June 20. Turning-gear.-On the s t a r t i n g - handle shaft e is mounted a screwed sleeve 1 carrying three ratchet-wheels 37, 17, 9, connected to the normal starting-handle h, a spring-retracted pulley 15, and a disengaging plate 3. This plate has on one side a projecting ring 4 with two cam-shaped recesses 11 adapted on a premature ignition to coact with stops 44 on the automobile frame, and disconnect the starting- shaft from the crank-shaft c. On the other side of the plate are formed a number of projections 10, to one of which the retracting-spring is attached. The pulley is oscillated through a Bowden or other flexible transmission from a lever at the side of the vehicle, a spring buffer being used with the lever. The starting-shaft, together with the plate 3 and pulley, is moved axially to couple the starting and crank shafts by a cord &c. 48 connected to the plate. A casing 7 encloses the mechanism. To prevent unwinding of the retracting-spring when the parts are being mounted on or removed from the starting-shaft, a screw 23 carried by the pulley can be threaded into the plate 3.
