Abstract
10,980. Ashcroft, E. A. May 4. Alkali metals and their compounds, obtaining.-A fused mixture of an alkali hydrate and an alkali cyanide, with or without other salts, is used as electrolyte with an anode of an alkali-metal alloy, prepared in another cell. Suitable proportions are-60 parts of sodium hydrate and 40 parts of sodium cyanide, or 63 parts of sodium hydrate, 30 parts of sodium cyanide, and 7 parts of sodium carbonate or chloride. With 100 kilograms of electrolyte, a current of 10,000 amperes may be used. The lead alloy may contain 5-10 per cent. of sodium. Both the electrolyte and the alloy are kept in motion. Specifications 1001/12, 1002/12, 1003/12, 1005/12, and 25,144/13 are referred to.
