Printing-surfaces; impression s u r f a c e s.- Photogravure printing- cylinders are built up with a printing surface or shell in several parts so that a damaged portion can be removed by replacing the part carrying such portion. The parts B may be arranged side by side to form a complete shell, or, as shown in Fig. 1, separated by non-etched parts D, and are secured on a perforated cylindrical drum A by bolts and nuts C. The drum A may have a gap through which the hand can be inserted to operate the nuts C,such gap being covered by a shell part E secured only at the ends and provided with internal stiffening-ribs F. The adjacent edges of the parts may be shaped to fit together closely, or spaces may be filled in with cement, and the transverse abutments are preferably arranged at a slight angle across the cylinder to prevent the doctor from catching. The surface of the impression cylinder H, Fig. 4, is preferably built up of sheets G of suitable material secured in the same manner as the printing-plates B or otherwise, and arranged to come against the plates B when in operation.
