6699. Evans, A. G. March 17. Pottery.-In vacuumjacketed vessels of earthenware, china, &c., the vacuum is produced by providing an opening E in the outer wall C through which the air from the jacket escapes during the process of firing in the oven, the opening being sealed automatically hy means of a pellet F of glaze, or of glaze mixed with the ' body ' or clay, which fluxes and runs into the opening and subsequently solidifies. The opening is formed at the bottom of a small depression D in the bottom of the outer wall, the vessel being inverted during firing.
