Abstract

110,649. Allen, B. J., and Ames, R. Y. Dec. 11, 1916. Moulds; processes.-Relates to the casting of articles from slip mixtures in plaster, porous pottery, or other absorbent moulds and consists in applying a vacuum to augment deposition. The moulds may be encased wholly or partly by a vacuum jacket. For small articles such as insulators, the mould is formed of porous pottery with the outer face glazed to form the vacuum chamber. In the production of articles of varying thickness, the thickness is exaggerated and coned deposition by saturating thin parts with water or by applying to the thick parts perforated or porous vessels filled with calcium chloride conveniently mixed with asbestos; or the mould a may be surrounded by a cast-iron jacket e in which it is supported by studs g so arranged as to facilitate exhaustion from the thick parts of the article and to retard it from the thin parts. Where it is necessary to remove superfluous slip, air is admitted to the vacuum chamber during such removal. For articles such as plumbago crucibles or fireclay glass-house pots, outside and inside moulds are used, the inside mould being removed immediately the cast material is sufficiently hard. To prevent bursting, the moulds may be strengthened with steel bars and wire or expanded metal and the mould parts clamped together by metal bands fitted with tension screws.
