Winches; driving - gear. - A clutch for coupling the spindle of a sounding- winch to the winding - drum comprises a loose cylindrical bolt C lying in a recess E in the spindle D when the drum is free, and engaging one of a series of shallower recesses B in the interior of the drum, when it is desired to connect the drum to its spindle. To allow the cord to run out, the winch handle is turned and held so that the spindle occupies the position shown, the bolt C falling to the bottom of the recess E. In order to wind up the cord, a brake is first applied to the drum, and the winch handle is then turned until the bolt C falls partly into one of the slots B.
