Drilling-machines, for example of the type shown in Fig. 1, have the belt pulley on the tool spindle fitted with change-speed gearing to avoid the use of cone pulleys. The pulley 1, Fig. 2, is keyed to a pinion 3 in driving relation with a pinion 4 through compound pinions 5, 6, 5<a>, 6<a> carried by studs on a loose plate 8. A pin 9 adapted to engage a hole in the plate 8 and a clutch fork 14 are so connected to a speed-controlling bar 13 that when the clutch 12 gives a direct drive from the pulley to the spindle the plate 8 is free, and when the pulley is free the plate is locked. Tapping.-The gear may be arranged to give a reverse motion for tapping.
