Abstract
706,273. Screw-cutting and tapping attachments. SAUNT, Ltd., J. A. April 27, 1953 [Jan. 28, 1952], No. 2232/52. Class 83 (3) A tap, or die head for use with a lathe, comprises a slidable holder 13 for the tool (not shown), and a friction member 21 on the holder movable into driving contact with one or the other of two friction driving members 19, 20 in a gear-box 11. The gear-box 11 is supported by a shank 10 from a tailstock or turret and a lay shaft 14 in the box is driven by the lathe or by a separate motor. The tool is driven, through the friction members 19, 20, by gears 15 ... 18, from the lay shaft 14 at a lower, or a higher, speed than that of the work to cut the threads or withdraw the tool, the gears 17, 18 being attached to the members 19, 20 respectively. Springs 22 are located between the driving members 19, 20 and the driven member 21 which is engaged with the member 19 by the reaction of the' work on the tool as the shank 10 is advanced in the thread-cutting direction. Upon withdrawing the tool, the member 20 is pulled into engagement with the member 21. The length of thread cut may be limited by a stop (not shown). The clutch elements, which may be submerged in oil, may also be arranged to overlap each other.
