Azo dyes, forming on the material.-Monoazo and disazo dyes are obtained on the fibre from unsulphonated diazo or tetrazo compounds and the condensation products from formaldehyde and arylides of 2:3-oxynaphthoic acid, described in Specification 3312/14, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]. Examples are given of the production of red and blue shades from diazotized p-nitraniline and tetrazotized dianisidine respectively and the condensation product from formaldehyde and the anilide of 2:3-oxynaphthoic acid. The use of the diazo compounds cf p-toluidine, #-cumidine, o-anisidine, m- and p-nitro-o-anisidine, and alpha-naphthylamine, or the tetrazo compound of a mixture of benzidine and dianisidine, and of the condensation products from formaldehyde and toluidides, nitranilides, or chloranilides, e.g. the m-nitranilide or mchloranilide, of 2:3-oxynaphthoic acid, is also specified. In the above process, the fabric may be impregnated with a mixture of formaldehyde and solution of an alkali salt of the arylide instead of with the isolated condensation product.
