Abstract

1701. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. Jan. 21. Pitot-tube apparatus. -Comprises improvements i n Pitot nozzle plugs for compensating for the effects o f temperaturechanges, for supporting the plug at its inner end, for limiting the pressure-difference due to exceptionally high velocities, and for cleaning the plug. The plug 11, Fig. 1, is inserted into the main 10 and is provided with four openings, of which 13, 14 form one pair, which are connected to a manometer or the like. The tube 25 is provided with openings 27 facing the fluid stream, and is supported at its inner end by a plug 26 screwed into the main 10. The lower pressure tube 28 carries a block 35 sliding in the tube 25, the block 35 carrying a hollow pin 38. In the event of unequal expansion of the outer and inner tubes due to unequal temperatures, the pin 38 moves in the slot 38<a>. Between the outer and inner tubes is mounted an intermediate tube 29 which is spaced from the outer tube by studs 31. When the velocity of fluid in the pipe is very high, the pressure-difference produced is decreased by connecting the lowpressure passage to three orifices, Fig. 4, one of which is facing the fluid stream. The pressure transmitted will thus be somewhat increased. When it is desired to clean the plug, the valves on the pipes 17, 18 leading to the manometer are closed, and the valves on the other two pipes leading from the plug are opened. Fluid is thus blown through the plug into the atmosphere.
