Abstract

699,235. Pitot-tube flowmeters. PRESTON, J. H. Nov. 24, 1950 [Nov. 25, 1949], No. 30271/49. Class 69(i) In a pitot-tube type flowmeter for fluids of low viscosity, the pitot tube is arranged in the flow pipe at a distance of approximately ¥ the radius from the axis of the pipe, in which position the vibration is independent of Reynolds number. In pipes of other than circular section, the term " radius " means half the distance apart of opposite walls in relation to which the pitot tube is set and the position of the pitot tube is actually within the range 0.72-0.76 of the radius. As shown in Fig. 1, a portion 1 of the flow pipe carries four pitot tubes 3a, 3b and four static holes 4, the axial parts 3a of the pitot tubes lying at ¥ R. The static holes 4 should be at least ten pitot tube diameters upstream of the radial part 3b of the pitot tube and should be in line with the pitot tube mouth but should lie on diameters at 45 degrees to the pitot tubes. The tube should extend half a pipe diameter ahead and behind the static holes. The pitot tubes may be connected to a single manometer to obtain the mean flow or to separate manometers to detect flow asymmetry. The pitot tubes may be traversed from the pipe wall to beyond the axis by a micrometer and in one form (not shown) a single micrometer adjusts the four pitot tubes simultaneously and equally. Alternatively only one of the pitot tubes has a micrometer attachment and this may be rotated with respect to the pipe.
