Abstract

943. Watkins, A. A. July 11. Variable-speed friction and chain gearing.- In a change-speed friction gear, suitable for motor-vehicles, of the kind in which an intermediate axially-movable roller engages driving and driven disks not in axial alinement, and speed change is produced by raising or lowering the roller, a single hand-lever is employed for adjusting the roller and for locking it in an adjusted position. The intermediate roller C; which engages driving and driven disks A, B, is mounted in a frame D adapted to slide on a bar G supported by pivoted levers H. Sectors J on the levers H engage sectors on a shaft L connected through link-work to a hand-lever V. Instead of sectors, cams or eccentrics may be employed. A rack N connected to the frame D is adapted to be engaged by a toothed jaw 0 operated by an eccentric on a spindle Q coupled to the lever V. The lever V is movable in two directions at right-angles. In one direction of movement, the shaft L is operated to lift or lower the roller C and thereby alter the gear; in the other direction, the shaft Q is operated to lock the roller in its adjusted position. The driven shaft F is movable axially to bring the disk B into and out of engagement with the roller C, and a roller a coupled to the driving-shaft E can be brought into contact with the disk B for the purpose of obtaining a reverse drive. Motion can be transmitted between the shafts E, F by means of a chain drive, the chain-wheel j on the driven shaft being coupled thereto by a friction clutch. The movable member k of this clutch engages a rib on the shaft F when being brought into action, and thereby moves the shaft axially to remove the disk B from engagement with the roller C. A. spring m serves to maintain the disk Band roller C in contact, and a spring R presses the roller C into contact with the disk A.
