Abstract

27,422. Hozier Engineering Co., and Govan, A. Dec. 12. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to three-speed and reversing toothed gearing described in Specification No. 5945, A.D. 1901, and consists in means whereby the hand-lever is moved hard over against dead stops for maximum, intermediate, or minimum speeds instead of being moved into notches in a quadrant which cannot be easily seen or felt in the dark. Resilient connections between the clutch forks and the sliding clutch members are also provided, so that the hand-lever may be thrown right over whether the clutches engage at once or not. Fig. 2 shows the gear box B and the operating - mechanism in plan. A single handlever moving in the T-shaped slot or guide C, is used to effect the changes in speed. This lever is pivoted to a rock-shaft, on which is an arm E. This arm, through the levers E', F, moves a change-wheel on the shaft H to give the high or medium speed according to whether the lever occupies the end 2 or the end 3 of the slot. The lever also has a tail-piece, which, through a link I, moves a change-wheel on the shaft K to give the lowest speed when the lever is placed at the end 4 of the slot. The springs may either be between the lever arm and the clutch or wheel on which it acts in the gear box, or, as shown in Fig. 3, springs S may be arranged to transmit the movement from, say, the lever E' to the lever F through parts jointed to the former.
