Syringes.-In an injection syringe, the piston 22 is actuated by mechanical means comprising a worm 7 and worm-wheel 9 and a piston-rod 6 provided with a screw-thread which engages a corresponding thread on the interior of the wheel 9. The shaft 8 of the worm 7 is in a plane parallel to the plane of the longitudinal axis of the rod 6 and is at right-angles to that axis ; it is driven by a flexible shaft connected to it by a right-angle gear. The casing of the flexible shaft is detachably connected to the shaft 8 by means of a loose sleeve on the shaft 8 provided with an opening opposite to which the end of the flexible shaft is forced on to the shaft 8 and held thereon by turning down an angular piece pivoted on the loose sleeve. A plate pivoted on the end of the casing of the flexible shaft engages a circular groove in the shaft 8 and is held in place by a pin on the pivoted angular piece. The piston 22 has one or two peripheral grooves 23, and is loosely connected to the rod 6 by a pin 24. Part of the screw-thread on the rod 6 is cut away to provide flat surfaces 19 on which a scale is mounted. The rod passes through a correspondingly-shaped opening 16 in a sleeve 15.
