Abstract

Ratchet gearing.-Relates to means for conveying rectilinear reciprocating motion from a rod to a block, the block only moving between certain prescribed limits. A lever 21 pivoted to the driven block 23 carries on a pin 6 a lever 9 to which is pivoted a clutch block 2 engaging a groove in the driving-rod 20. A pin 14 on the block 23 passes through an opening 15 in the lever 21 and engages a slot 11 in the lever 9. By means of a spring 16 connecting the pin 6 to the block 23, the lever 9 is rocked round the pin 14 and moves the clutch block 2 into driving-engagement with the rod 20, the pressure increasing with the load on the block 23. When the rod 20 moves to the right, the block 23 is carried along until an extension of the lever 9 engages a stop 10 (shown dotted) and lifts the clutch block 2. A spring 24 may be used to return the block 23, the lever 9 engaging a stop 10 (shown in full lines) so as to keep the rod 20 disengaged from the block until the stop is removed and the rod is again moving towards the right.
