Abstract

25,081. Esplen, A. Nov. 3. Actuating. - Valve apparatus for controlling, for example starting, stopping, and reversing, ships' turbine engines from the bridge or other place of command comprises a handcontrolling instrument 15, 16 of the ships' telegraph type operating through shafting and bevel - gearing 17, or chain or other connexions, upon a controlling-valve 14 which supplies motor fluid to an hydraulic or other fluid - pressure piston operating - gear 10, 13 for operating the two valves 2 that supply steam to ' ahead ' and ' astern ' turbines. The operating-gear 10, which may be of a known type provided with hunting- gear control-valve apparatus such as 12, 13, operates through the lever 4 and the valve spindles 3; an actuating wheel and screw 6 are provided for connexion with the lever 4 for direct manual operation when required. The bridge control may be effected in connexion with the engine - room telegraph instrument 18, and the connexions 17 may include a fluid-pressure relay apparatus for operating the controlling-valve 14. In the arrangement shown, the valve 14 is connected to the condenser by the pipe 19 and to different positions in the length of the operating- cylinder 13 of the hunting-gear by the pipes 20 so that the movement of the piston therein and consequently of the rod 11 and the valves 2 may take place in successive stages according to the degree of movement of the control 16 or 18.
