Abstract

13,603. Esplen, A. June 4. Regulating; reversing.-In apparatus for controlling marine or other engines or turbines from a distance, the ahead and astern valves 3, Fig. 1, are operated by an engine 2, preferably of the Brown type, the valve 4 of which is controlled by an hydraulic cylinder 7 connected by pipes 8 with a transmitter on the bridge or elsewhere. The piston-rod of the cylinder 7 operates the rod 16 of the valve 4 through levers 10, 12 and a link 11. The valve is closed by the movement of the engine, the lever 12 being connected by a link with the cross-head. Pins 25 on the spindles of the valves 3 engage slots in a lever 23, which is operated by the connecting-rod 20 of the engine 2. One form of the transmitter, Fig. 2, comprises a rod 31 the ends of which work in cylinders 30, the rod being formed with a screwed portion 35 engaging a screw-thread in a bevel-wheel 33 driven by the handwheel 6. An indicator with a hand moving over a dial may be operated by the rod 31 or by the bevel-gearing. By comparing This indicator with an electric indicator showing the speed of the main engines, loss of balance in the hydraulic system can be detected. Adjustment is effected by means of a pipe controlled by a tap connecting the ends of the cylinders 30. Where a single transmitting- cylinder is employed, the adjustment may alternatively be effected automatically by small ports uncovered by the piston in its central position. In the transmitter shown in Fig. 3, the handwheel 6 operates a collar loose on the rod 31 by means of a link 40, bell-crank 39, link 38, and a nut 37 on the hand-wheel spindle 35. The motion of the collar is transmitted to the rod 31 through springs 41. Leakage from the hydraulic system is replaced from a tank 45, Fig. 1, by a pump 46 and pipe 47. Excess of fluid returns to the tank through a safety-valve and a pipe 49. To enable the engine to be stopped in an emergency, the throttle valve 50 is arranged to be closed also by hand-operated gear. The throttle valve is operated by a cylinder controlled by a pilot valve operated by a lever 51. One end of the lever may be controlled by the governor, while the other end is operated by an hydraulic cylinder 7<x> connected by pipes 8<x> to a cylinder the piston of which is operated by hand-levers. Similar apparatus for emergency or ordinary use may be connected to the cylinder 7 of the engine 2 by pipes 8<x> as shown.
