23,023. Peacock, S. Oct. 11. Phosphorus pentachloride ; alkali hydrates.- Phosphorus pentachloride is prepared by heating together a phosphate and an alkali chloride in a closed chamber in an atmosphere devoid of free oxygen, while drawing off the pentachloride and other gaseous products so as to maintain the partial pressure of these below atmospheric pressure. Tri-calcium phosphate is used, and the residue consists of lime and alkali oxide, from which the alkali oxide is ext.acted and recovered as hydrate.
