Cutting-edges, treating.-A device for holding and retaining in position the blade of a chisel or plane to enable it to be sharpened accurately comprises a thin strip of hard wood A having a piece B rigidly secured thereto and a piece C pivotally secured thereto by means of a screw E, the ends of the pieces B, C being cut so as to form a slot K in which the blade is placed. The width of the slot may be varied by loosening a thumb-nut G carried by a bolt F secured in the piece C and passing, with a limited amount of play, through a hole in the strip A; the nut G is tightened when the slot has been adjusted to the required width. A runner I carried by a screw H screwing into the piece C serves to alter the bevel of the blade, and when the device is in use, rests on a table &c. as the blade is moved on an oilstone.
