Intensifiers.-Comprises improvements in devices for modifying the pressure of the water'delivered by an accumulator, the application to calendering- machines for p r e s s i n g fabrics being mentioned. The cylinder 2, Figs. 1 and 4, supported by the frame 3, is supplied with pressure water from the accumulator through pipes 4, 4<a>. Water is conducted to the press cylinder by pipes 4<b>, 4<c>, while a connecting-pipe 4<d> controlled by a valve 7 is provided. The piston 5 and rod 5<a> move downward in supplying water at a reduced pressure to the presses, and at the end of the stroke, the rod 7b opens the valve 7, thus admitting full pressure water to the pipes 4<d>, 4<c>, and lower side of the piston 5, and forcing the piston 5 to the top of its stroke, whereupon the valve 7 is again closed. The pistons and rods 5, 5<a> may be made with different relative diameters so that they may be interchanged when a different pressure of water is required. Alternatively a series of cylinders with rods of varying diameters may be used, the appropriate one being selected for the pressure required. The interconnexion of the piston 5 and valve 7 is of particular utility for avoiding the shock that would otherwise occur when the pressure is relieved on the approach of a seam in the fabric to the calender rollers.
