JULIUS PRELETHNER', GF ERIE. PENNSYLVANIA.
Application inea April 2o,
Tootl whom t may' concern Be it known that I, J ULIUs PRELEUTHNER, a citizen' of Austria-Hungary, residing at Erie, in the county OErie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Hydraulic Presses; and I do hereby declare the following tp beva full, clear,` and exact description skilled in the art to` which itappertains-to make and use .the same. reference being had letters of reference marked partI of this speciticatioi'i. l
My invention relates to steam-hydraulic forging presses and has for its object thet construction and arrangementof a plurality of steam'intensifiers:for such a press in such. a manner that each may be operated singly, ora-ny two or more intensifiers may be -yop'erated simultaneously, whereby a greater range of pressure may be utilized thereon, forming Int-' steam-hydraulic forging presses as heretofore constructed, provided with a plurality ointensifiers, it. is impossible to oper- Aatetwo or more oisuch intensificrs in unison.- because of the fact that the high-pressure'intensier will overcome the power of l overcome these disadvantages by arranging a series ot .intensifiersof different diameters. each ot said intensitiers being provided with a piston f and all ot' said pistons being secured upon a piston-rod in tandem, which piston-rod extends into the fluid chamber of the press and forms the plunger therefor. arrange the intensifiers. preferztbly super-imposed abo-ve the fluid-cylinder of the'press and in tandem therewith, butI they may, however. be c'ou- .nected With the press in any position dosired, as for instance,- at one side of the press. upon a suitable foundation of their own. either -in vertical or horizontal position and the fluid chamber thereof connected with the Huid-cylinder of the press by 'any suitable connection. The advantage of this con.- l struction .isb that each intensifier may bei used singly, or any two or more may be used t simultaneously, thereby obtaining the corni bined power of all the intensiiers operated.
that when the low-pressure intensifier is Another advantage of `this construction is,
.used only, less steaxnis required than when s .the high-pressure'is used,` which is not the Speccation of Letterslatent.

presses as ordinarily 'conatter set fort-h and explained and illustrated in the accompanying' c lrmvingsin which the figure is a view partly 1n elevation and partly in vertical section ofia hydraulicpress embodying my invention.
In this drawingA, indicates the base of the press upon which is placed the anvil B, upon which base the upper part of the press is supported by means of columns C. Upon these columns C, is placed the press-frame D, which is adj usted and secured thereon by means oflnuts ci Within this frame D. is secured a hydraulic-cylinder E, having in the upper end 'tl'xereof the usual. stuffing-box mechanism E', and also an opening' in which is `secured a supply-pipe F. XVithin the cylinder E is placed the press-.ram G, having in thc upper end thereof a cylindrical recess G.- On the lower end ot this ram G. aretransversc 'arms (if, the ends of which embrace und slide upon the columns C. and secured beneath the lower end ot' the' ram (l. is a die ll. which operates in oppositirm .to theanvil B,
Super-imposed upon the press-trame. l). l place a series4 ot' two or moresteam intensiti'ers. consisting' ot .steam cylinders J. J", and JL'. provided with suitable cylinder-heads j. j. ji. j. jl" and 'ithiu euch ot the cylindersI there are pistons. K, li". and K2. which arc mounted und secured in tandem on the pistou-rod L. which extends through suitahli.v paclted openings in the .several cylinder-heini? and through the sluiting-box mechanism l. into thix hydrantitt-cylinder ll. For raising thi` ruin G, and die ll. i provide stcaiii-cylinders hi. in which there are pistonsl M. from which piston-rods M2. extend downwardly through suitable stutting-box mechanisms m, to the transverse arms G2, where they are secured by means of nuts m',
The supply-pipe F, is provided with a check-valve mechai'lism t), ot' usual and ordinary construction and havinl a valve-Stem O. by means ot' which the check-valve may be opened to permit liquid to escape from the hydraulic cylinder E. through the pipe F. when it is desired to raise the ram G.
The steam cylinder J, is provided `with an air-vent, Land a steam port opening, `2; the steam cylinder J', is also provided with llt) exhaustinv an air-ventopening,'3, and a steam port opening, 4, and the steam cylinder J2 is likewise provided with an air-vent opening, 5, and a steam port opening, 6; the cylinders M, are each provided with an air-vent opening, 7, in the upper part thereof, and a steam porty opening in the lower part thereof. The steam port openings, 2, 4, 6, and 8, are connected with the steam line by means of suit-able valves and piping, which, being no part of my invention are not shown and described.
yIn operation, the ram G, is lowered by steam from the lower ends of the cylinders -M, and water is admitted through the pipe and check-valve F, and O, into the hydraulic-cylinder E, to compensate for the lowering of the ram G, in said cylinder. Steam is then admitted into one or more of the intensifier c linders J J or J2 Y a l according to the amount of pressure desired,`
which forces the piston-rod L, downward into the fluid in the hydraulic cylinder E, which, in turn forces the ram G, downward in proportion as the fluid is, displaced by the piston-rod L. It-will thus be observed that each of the intensifier c linders operates the same plunger, so t at thel high* pressure cylinder J, vwhen operated, does not displace any less of the liquid in the cylinder E, than doesthe cylinder J or J2.
With my arrangement of intensifiers, it
is possible'to combine any two or more thereof in simultaneous operation, obtaining thereby with three steam intensiers, seven combinations of pressure, which is a marked advantage as compared with the arrange-- ment of intensiiiers heretofore used in connection with hydraulic presses.
Having thus shown and described my invention, so as to enableothers to construct and utilize the same, what I claim as new and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent is l. The combination in a hydraulic-press, ot a fluid cylinder having an opening in the upper end thereof, a ram mounted in saidv cylinder, and extending downwardly there from, a cross-head on said ram, a series ofcylinder, pistons in each cylinder'o said .z
series removably secured on said plungerrod, steam cylinders supported on said brackets, pistons in said cylinders, pistonrods secured in said pistons and extending downwardly therefrom and secured to said crosshead, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in a hydraulic-press, of a base, an anvil thereon, columns secured in said base, a frame supported on said columns, a fluid cylinder having an opening in the upper end thereof mounted in said frame, a ram mounted in said fluid cylinder andy extending downwardly therefrom, a cross-head on said ram, sleeves on said cross-head embracing said column, a series-of steam cylinders removably secured together in vtandem by means of cylinder heads closing their upper ends, removably secured upon said frame concentrically with said Huid cylinder, brackets on the sides of o e of said steam cylinders, a common p linger-rod extending through the series of steam cylinders and 'downwardly into Said uid cylindei, pistons in each cylinder of said series-removably secured on said common plunger-rod, steam cylinders supported ons'aid brackets, pistons therein and piston-rods secured in said pistons extending downwardly therefrom and secured to said cross-head, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
