Abstract

Apparatus is provided for operating a hydraulic ram device 10 comprising a piston 11 reciprocable in a cylinder 13 between a first inoperative position and a second operative position. The apparatus comprises a pump 16 for supplying hydraulic fluid selectively to either side of the piston, and a gas- charged accumulator 27 for storing hydraulic fluid under pressure. A valve circuit is provided for connecting the pump and accumulator to the cylinder in a first condition in which the pump and accumulator are connected to one side of the piston for supplying fluid under pressure to said one side of the piston to move the piston from said first position to said second position and a second condition in which said pump is connected to the other side of the piston to move the piston from said second to said first position and the accumulator is in communication with said one side of the piston. The arrangement is such that movement of the piston from said second position to said first position forces hydraulic fluid into the accumulator to charge the accumulator. <IMAGE>
