Abstract

19,700. Hay, M. F., and Guhrauer, F. Sept. 1. Submarine vessels.- Tu permit a submarine boat to run at semisubmergence by the aid of combustion engines only, an adjustable hydroplane is fitted to the hull of the boat, being so arranged as to contact always with the surface of the water. The plane 28 is mounted rotatably on a frame 26 which is pivoted on a hollow shaft 27 and maintained in action by means of fingers 30 on sliders 31, which are operated from inside the boat through worm gearing 34, levers 32, and levers 33 pivoted to the inner shaft 40. The plane may be a thin plate or of hollow boat - like form. The inclination of the frame is adjustable by means of the lever 37, rigidly attached to the frame, which is operated by the piston of a compressed-air cylinder 35. In addition, a hawser 38 may be employed to pull down the free end of the frame. To avoid the creation of eddycurrents by the cross - members of the frame, fish-form pieces 39 may be strung upon them. More than one hydroplane may be employed. If the degree of submergence of the boat is to be permanently limited to that permitted by the hydroplane, this is fixed in position upon the hull of the boat. In both cases, a known automatically-controlled air-inlet for the engines is provided above water-level, together with a known compensating - means for the petrol consumed.
