Abstract

18,865. Owens, C. T. Aug. 19. Combined-flow type.-The rotor is provided with a number of rows of blades 30, Figs. 4 and 5, parallel to the axis of the turbine; the stator being provided with similar blades 32, Fig. 5, inclined to the axis of the turbine. Ports 11, 12 are provided in the casing and perform the functions of inlet and exhaust ports alternatively. Assuming that the steam is admitted by way of ports 11, the first row of blades a operate as a jet-wheel. The steam is subsequently successively re-directed axially by the blades 32 upon the succeeding stages, which thereby act as axial-flow stages. When running in the reverse direction the row of blades g have a jet-wheel action and the remaining stages an axial-flow action. The casing may be provided with by-passes 35, Fig. 4, in which case the first row of blades act as a circular-flow. stage. Plant.-A number of turbines 2, 3, 4, Figs. 1 and 2, in axial alinement, drive a common shaft 5. The steam passes through the turbines in series. Reversing.-Each turbine is provided with a cylindrical valve chamber 6, provided with an inlet port 7 and two exhaust ports 8. A piston valve 13 places the ports 12, 11 in communication with the inlet port 7 and one of the exhaust ports 8 respectively, or vice versa. The three reversing-valves are simultaneously operated by a rock-shaft 19, Figs. 1 and 2, actuated by a fluid-relay 24. Each pair of exhaust ports are connected to the succeeding inlet port by a Y-connexion such as 9, 10, Fig. 2. Regulating.-An auxiliary supply of live steam may be supplied to the intermediate and low-pressure stages to facilitate starting by a pipe 37, Fig. 4.
