Abstract

16,807. Towler, J. A. July 22. Regulating delivery by varying speed of motor.- Controlling-gear for electrically-driven pumps in which an hydraulic ram is employed to operate the rheostat switch is provided with a cataract piston sliding over a rod formed with recesses so that the movement of the cataract piston is hastened at certain positions to enable the rheostat switch to pass rapidly from one contact to the next, and prevent fusing of the contacts. Fig. 1 shows the hydraulic ram 1, the rod 3 of which operates the switch-arm spindle 6 through a rack-and-pinion mechanism 4, 5. The rod 3 also carries the cataract piston 9 working in the cylinder 8. The piston 9 slides over a rod 11 provided with recesses 11<x>. The movement of the piston 9 is regulated normally by the needle valves 10, but rapid movement is permitted when the piston passes over a recess 11<c>.
