Mechanical toys.-A pictorial mechanical toy comprises a hoop or other flexible support, or a rigid frame, having secured thereto at one or both faces a textile fabric bearing advertising &c. matter, so arranged that the flexible support or the edges of the fabric may be pulled or compressed or otherwise distorted so as to distort the matter displayed. The fabric may be exhibited at an opening in a rigid, figured surface. A flexible hoop 1, Fig. 9. may be secured by abutments 16, 16<1> to rods 10, 10<1> which oscillate through brackets 9 under the action of a rotated crank 13 and distort the fabric on the hoop intermittently. A rotary eccentric disk 23, Fig. 11, may oscillate arms 17, 19 about pivots 18, 20 with the same result; or a rod 26, Fig. 14, oscillating within a hollow handle 29 under a finger grip 27 may change the shape of the elliptical hoop 1 against the restraining influence of an india-rubber cord or spring 30. A pair of similar crank-shafts 36, Fig. 15, interconnected by sprocket gearing, have connecting-rods, joined up to the edges of a fabric 2 so that when one of the shafts 36 is rotated the surface of the fabric has a longitudinal wavy movement. A lever 54, Fig. 25, rocking about a pivot 55 on one of a set of spaced fixed laths 43, 45, 47, 49 has a slot and pin connexion 57 to enable it to oscillate a lath 44 in the opposite direction to that in which it oscillates a lath 46. A lever 58, pivoted to a fixed lath 47, conveys motion from the lath 46 to the lath 48. All the laths move against the restraining action of springs and produce a longitudinal wavy movement on the fabric 2.
