SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,620. dated February 13, 1894.

Be it known that I, HENRY CHANDLER FUL- LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bentonville, in the county of Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in toys, and has special reference to that class of toys known as toy dancers wherein a figure representing a man, the joints of which are loosely connected, is employed and is designed to be supported over a vibrating board so that the feet and legs of the toy are caused to vibrate or move in unison with the vibrations of the board as caused by knocks imparted thereto by the hand of the operator.

The objects of my invention are to cheapen the cost of production of the toy by forming the same of sheet-metal; to provide for a more perfect imitation of dancing; and also to provide for a convenient packing of the device for shipment.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings:l3igure l is a side elevation of the toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail of one of the legs.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both the figures of the drawings.

In practicing my invention I preferably form the body and head integral, or in other words of a single piece of sheet-metal, and in so doing follow the contour or outline of the person. The body-portion 1 has pivoted, by a transverse rivet 2, the upper members 3, of the legs, and these members are designed to swing loosely upon the pivot. The lower ends of these members each has riveted thereto, as at 4, a lower leg-member 5, which also swings loose upon its rivet, and finally the feet 6 are pivoted at their ankles, loosely, by means of rivets 7, to the lower ends of the lower leg-members 5. Thus it will be seen that the entire joints at the knee, ankle, and hip are loose, and each member of the leg is free to move at will. In order, however, to prevent any unnatural movement upon the part of the leg members I produce suitable stops. Inasmuch as the leg members are formed of sheet metal the stops are struck up therefrom. \Vith this in view therefore and for the purpose of decreasing the cost of the 9, as indicated at 10, the forearms being piv-.

oted to the upper portions of the arms by the rivets 11, so that the arms hang loosely at the sides of the toy.

A bored socket 12, is located at the back of the figure, and the same is provided with a threaded perforation disposed at a right angle to the socket and receiving a bindingscrew 14., the inner end of which is designed to impinge upon the wire-supporting rod 15.

In operation the supporting-rod is held in the hand of the operator and the figure held lightly upon a resilient board 16, whose opposite end is secured in some manner to a base. As for instance, the said end may be supported by a chair, the operator sitting on the end to retain it in position, which also places said operator in a convenient position for manipulating the toy. Having been placed in position the operator beats with the soft part of his list or hand upon the board, which is caused to vibrate and communicate with the feet of the toy causing the same to keep perfect time with the beats and music, and thus perform a clever jig. The supportingwire may be removed by first loosening the set-screw, and thus the toy packed flat in a convenient manner for shipment.

The toy will be found to be both amusing and instructive, and its steps are constantly varied as the beats upon the board vary both in time and in force.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The herein described improved toy, the same being formed of sheet metal and consisting of the body-portion and the loosely jointed legs, each comprising overlapping members, the edges of said members being struck-up and bent to form stops for limiting the movements of the sections, substantially as specified.

2. The herein described improved toy, the same constructed of sheet metal consisting of the body-portion, the pivoted upper leg members having their opposite edges thereof at the lower ends provided with clips bent at an angle to said members, the lower leg-members pivoted to the lower ends of the upper legmembers, and the feet loosely pivoted to the lower ends of the lower leg-members, and provided at their upper ends at opposite edges with clips bent at an angle thereto and loosely embracing and forming stops for the lower leg-members substantially as specified.
