Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1917.
Application filed May 19, 1917. Serial N0. 169,715.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. REYN- onns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hermosa Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rocking Toys, of which the following is a specification.
Thepresent invention is primarily directed to amusement devices for children comprising a construction which is not only simple and durable, but one capable of afiording amusement to one or more children.
An object of the present invention resides in the production of a rocking base to which are pivotally connected handles adapted to be swung at an angle to the vertical plane, consequently one person may derive enjoyment from the amusement device, which otherwise will necessitate two or more persons to be present before the device could be operated.
A further embodiment of the invention is that the device may be readily folded into compact form, thus occupying but a minimum amount of space for the storage or transportation of the same, and one which, when the device is set up for use, will occupy but a small amount of space in order that the same may be installed in nurseries, dwellings and the like places.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of the amusement device constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the handles in folded position; and
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the handles attached at an angle to the vertical plane. 1
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, the apparatus generally is denoted by the character 5 comprising a thin flexible base plate 6 curved on the arc of a circle and to which is attached in spaced parallelism and along the opposite longitudinal edges thereof side members 7 simulating rockers. The attachment of the side membersv or rockers to the base plate is accomplished, more particularly owing to the flexibility of said plate, by the bending of the ends in embracing relation with the ter-' minals of the rockers, and connected as at 8 with the rockers through the medium of suitable fastening devices in the form of screws or the like, denoted by the character 9. The rockers of said members 7 may be constructed of any material found so desirable, and constitute a lower convexed edge 10 conforming with the contour of the base plate 6, accommodating the rockers to fit flush with the upper concaved surface 11 of the base plate, while the upper edges 12 of the rockers are straight.
13 designates a pair of bearing plates preferably formed of metal constructed from a circular blank of material formed therein at diametric opposite points with openings 14; and 15 respectively. The material from which these bearing plates are formed is bent along the dotted lines 16,
adapting the connecting portion 17- of the.
spaced parallel side flanges 18 being secured upon the straight upper edge 12 of the side members at a point intermediate the length thereof, by the insertion of fastening devices 19 through the diametrically arranged pair of openings 14. J ournaled in the openings 15 of the bearing plates for a horizontal swinging movement is a substantially U-shaped handle 20 terminally provided with trunnions 21 projecting through .the openings 15, and accomplishing a swinging connection of each of the handles to each of the bearing plates 13.
customarily, amusement devices of this nature have been so constructed to necessitate, when affording amusement to young people, that two or more parties are present in order to accomplish the rocking action of the toy by a person standing upon the base 6 thereof adjacent the ends of the same. I contemplate providing means which will afford each of the handles to be swung at an angle to a vertical plane, therefore one person by standing upon the base 6 adjacent the transverse center thereof can readily manipulate the device and in turn receive much enjoyment from the same. To this end, I provide a brace 22 having an inturned shank 23 and a second inturned shank 24. The shank 23 of the brace is adapted to pass through the outer limb 25 of the handles, and is prevented against any accidental displacement therefrom by the threading of a nut 26 on the said shank.
- By this construction, the brace will not only be pivotally connected with thehandle, but
maybe locked against swinging action by theprovision of the nut 26. Provided in the straight upper edge 12, of the side members or rockers is formed a plurality of notches 27 and 28. When it is desired to support the handles in a vertical'upright position, the shank 24 is thrown into the notch 27 and secured therein by the adjustment of the nut 29 on the shank '24 and in contact With the inner face er the rockers,
but on the other hand, when the adjustment of the handles is desired in order to assume scribed the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment nee-a ate,
thercoi, I desire tchave it understood that the define is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are Within-the scope of the appended claims.
What is claim d as new, is
1. An amusement device comprising a rocking base, side members provided with a plurality of notches secured to the opposite edges of said base, a handle svvinginglyv supported on said rockers, and means connected with the handle and adjustable in said notches for holding the handle in a vertical upright position or in a position at an angle to the vertical plane, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
. 2. An amusement device comprising a rocking base, notched side members carried by said base, bearing plates secured to the upper edges of said side members and pro vided with apertured flanges, a U-shaped -handle swingingly supported in the apertures of said flanges for a horizontal swinging movement, and means carried by said handle and adjustably engaging with the notches of said side members for supporting the handle in either a vertical upright position or at an angle to the vertical plane;
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
