INVENTORS AND GEGRGE SHAEPNACK, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA; SAID SHAIBJPNACK ASSIGNOB, T0 SAID ELME'N.
vinnn'ron.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE F. FLMEN and GEORGE Si-IARPNACK, citizens of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Vibrators, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vibrators especially those ofthe massage type, and the invention primarily has for its object to provide a l vibrator in which two distinctly different strokes, one a percussion stroke and the other a brushing stroke, can be obtained or a combination of the strokes may be had.
Another object of our invention is to provide a device of this character of a simple :i and effective construction which will greatly increase the effective uses to which the vibrator can bel put, and thereby increase the commercial value of the same.
In its generic nature the invention oomprises a vibrator having an applCittOI afm to whichthe various applicator instruments are attached, as desired, a motor including a rotating crank drive being connected with the applicator arm through a special shiftable connection so designed andy arranged that either a percussion stroke or a brushing stroke can be given to the applicator arm, as desired, the driving connection being such that a combination of the two strokes mentioned may be had, if desired. f
1n its more subordinate nature, the invention also includes those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be speciiically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on substantially the line 3--3 of Fig. 2, parts being in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a cross section thereof on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, parts being positioned to impart a rubbing or brushing motion to 'the applicator instrument. k
Fig. 5 is a similar View, the parts being positionedto impart a vibrating or percussion stroke to the applicator arm.

Application filed July 20, 1917. Serial No. 181,815.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a detail view illustrating a spring tension device for holding the shifting indicator arm to its different positions with retaining friction.
ln the drawings, in which like letters and numeral of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 is the driving motor, (preferably electrical) having a supporting casing, the front section 2 of which is designed to support the operating parts of the vibrator. 3 indicates the housing for the vibrator mechanism and this housing is open at 4 and secured to the front of the motor casing 2 byl screws to close the opening 4. The housing 3 has a neck 6 which is provided with a semi-spherical bearing surface 7 for the ball bearing portion 8 of the hollow guide bushing 9 in which the applicator arm 10 has its reciprocatirng` movement. A leather packing 11 is interposed between the ball 8 and the seat 'Z' and the ball 4 15 to which the links 16 and 17 are respectively connected, the short link 16 being also connected at 18 to the wrist pin of the crank disk 19, which disk is'secured at 20 to the end of the motor shaft 21.
22 is an arm which has a bearing pin 23a at one end to which the long link 17 is connected, and at the other end of the arm 22 is a threaded stub shaft 23 on which the indicator lever 24 is fastened, the lever 24 having a pointer 25 and the face 26 of the housing having suitable indication members 27 and 28 to indicate the di'erent mechanism positions to which the lever 24 is to be moved in order to effect either the percussion or the brush stroke. 1f desired, a spring 29 may be introduced between the lever 24 and the housing 3 to hold the parts with retaining friction and thereby maintain the arm 22 in any position to which it may be set by the lever.
1n practice, when the lever 24 is set at position B the stroke imparted to the applicator arm 10 will be a brushing or rocking stroke, whereas when the lever 24-is set to the position A, a percussion stroke will be imparted to `the applicator arm 10. When the lever 24 is set between the two extremes, a combination 0f these two movements can be obtained, shading off one into the Aother accordingly as the lever 24 is approaching one eXtreme position or the other.
The provision of the leather or other ilexible ,packing 7 enables lubricant to be applied t'o the moving parts in the casing without danger of its running down land following down the applicator arm or rod 10.
