Abstract

15,004. Sensini, I. June 30. Hand, foot, and like gear; automatic gear.- The distributing-valve is provided with two separate controlling surfaces having different laps which control the steam supplied to the cylinder from two sources. The supply is controlled by a differential valve which is controlled by a governor or by a valve connected to the reversing-lever. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the distributing-valve 24 has collars which control ports 22, 23 and have laps e, e' respectively. The steam is supplied to the valve-chest by passages 4, 4<1> controlled by the head 8, or by passages 5, 5<1> controlled by the head 9 of the differential-valve 7. The valve head with the greater lap c controls the steam from the passage 5<1>, and the head with the small lap e controls the ports 19, 20. When starting, the small opening 18 and then the port 15 in the valve 13 is brought over the port 17. The valve 7 is raised, and steam admitted to the cylinder by the edges having the small lap e<1>. When started, the valve 13 is moved to reverse the valve 7. The steam supplied to the cylinder is then controlled by the collars with the large lap e. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the stroke of the main valve is controlled by a governor. When working with greater steam lap, the channel 4<11> only is connected with the inlet. When the piston-valve stroke is increased and port 28 opened, fluid passes to valve 7<1> to move it to open port 5<11>. Fluid is then supplied to the cylinder past both controlling collars at each end of the valve. A modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 is described wherein the supply through channel 4<11> is controlled by a single annular ring carried by the main valve. During normal running, the initial admission takes place with a pressure inferior to boiler pressure, as the steam which first enters the cylinder is that which remains in the passages 5<1>, 26 or 5<11>, 26<1>. This obviates knocking at the dead centres. A further modification is described applied to a double-ported piston valve. The invention is applicable to flat slide valves.
