Abstract
13,195. Egan, B. J. June 8, 1911, [Convention date]. Springs, arrangement of and mounting bodies and undercarriages on.-Relates to vehicle-suspension devices in which the body is connected to the axle by means of a number of levers and links the movements of which are opposed by suitablydisposed springs, and consists in the particular constructions described with reference to Figs. 1 and 3 respectively. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a lever 2 is pivoted to the chassis 1 and secured to the axle 3, and a second lever 6 is pivoted to the lever 2 and linked at 7 to the chassis and carries a rod 5 sliding in an extension 4 of the levers 2 and surrounded by an adjustable compression spring 9. This spring may be assisted by or replaced by, a pneumatic cushion 12 constructed after the manner of a football. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the lever is in the form of a bell-crank 22 pivoted at the end of its short arm to a member 20 secured to the axle, and having a spring 24 interposed between its elbow and the member 20. A buffer spring 26 may be provided to cushion excessive shocks. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) also describes (1) a suspensiondevice similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but in which the springs are arranged between the chassis and the forward end of the lever 2, and (2) a suspensiondevice comprising a pair of links attached to the chassis at their upper ends and pivoted loosely at their other ends to a pair of levers attached to the axle. Springs are arranged between the levers and a fifth lever pivoted to the remaining levers at the ends where the pairs of levers are pivoted to one another. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
