Hatchways.-Portable cross-beams for ships are constructed in two parts, each part being hinged to brackets on the frame, and the central portions of the two parts are secured together by screwed bolts. Each of the parts 1, 2 is in the form of a girder, and is pivoted on bolts 10, 11 to the brackets 7, 8. Bevelled stops on the girders limit their motion. Bolts 15 passing through swivelled nuts 14 are formed with collars 17 engaging slots on the part 1 to secure the beam and to form a rigid structure.
